[都市快報]Volunteering at a Chinese kindergarten proves deeply rewarding

In the bustling city of Hangzhou, where cultures intertwine, one young educator is making a meaningful impact on the lives of children through the power of language.

As a third-year student of International Economics and Trade at China Jiliang University, I have had the incredible opportunity to volunteer at a Chinese kindergarten in Qiantang district, bringing joy and innovation to English teaching.

On March 21, I visited the kindergarten again. Unlike traditional translation-based methods, I believe in immersive learning. My classes were filled with energy, laughter, and interaction, creating an engaging environment where children absorbed English naturally. By using games, songs, and flashcards, I helped my students recognize English words without relying on Chinese translations. This technique allowed them to associate words directly with objects, actions, and emotions, making language acquisition more effective and enjoyable.

“Children learn best when they are having fun,” I always say. If they associate English with joy and excitement, they will develop a natural interest in the language and retain what they learn more easily.

In my teaching sessions, I incorporate dynamic activities like songs, games, and storytelling with visual cards to make learning English both enjoyable and effective. These interactive methods help students absorb the language effortlessly while having fun. While there are challenges--such as keeping young children engaged, overcoming language barriers, and addressing different learning speeds--the rewards are immensely satisfying. I see my students grow in confidence and improve their language skills, which is deeply fulfilling. Parents and kindergarten staff appreciate my dedication and innovative approach. This experience has also helped me cultivate valuable skills in creativity, problem-solving, and classroom management, all of which will benefit my future career.

My volunteer work bridges cultures, helping children appreciate cultural diversity and develop an open-minded attitude toward learning. Through interactive lessons with songs, games, and storytelling, I create a fun and engaging environment. This experience has deepened my patience, enhanced my creativity, and sharpened my classroom management skills, while also improving my communication and problem-solving abilities. Seeing my students grow in confidence and enthusiasm for learning has been incredibly rewarding, reaffirming my passion for education and cross-cultural connection.
